The History of Bappi Lahiri

Another shock had thrilled our Bollywood with the death of Bappi Lahiri. We did not overcome the loss of Lata Mangeshkar Ji and got hit with another loss of Bappi Lahiri Ji, who was also a great singer, composer, and record producer. He was also in politics. He was the one who popularised a new music style in our music industry which is synthesised disco.

Early Life

Born in a Bengali Brahmin family in Kolkata, Alokesh Aparesh Lahiri came on earth on 27 November 1952. His parents, Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both were Bengali musicians. Bappi Lahiri adopted this trait from them. He started playing Tabla when he was 3, initially trained by his parents.

His relatives include the great singer Kishore Kumar, his maternal uncle. He is also known as Disco King. Since childhood, he idolised American musician Elvis Presley and inspired him to wear jewelry.

Career

Mainly, he was known for music in the industry, but he was also a politician. He was famous for his knowledge about disco-style songs in which he brought orchestration and fusion of Indian music with international sounds and upbeat rhythms. He wrote several songs, mainly including dance numbers and disco songs. His most famous songs are:

  • Kaliyon Ka Chaman
  • Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost
  • Tamma Tamma Loge
  • Raat Baaki, Baat Baki

He also composed music for some ghazals. His top ghazals are:

He also worked in Bengali films as his basic was from Bengal. His famous Bengali movies are:

If we talk about his political career, he joined Bhartiya Janta Party on 31 January 2014 in the presence of Rajnath Singh. He was made a BJP candidate from Srerampur (Lok Sabha constituency) in 2014 but lost to Kalyan Banerjee.

Death

Bappi Lahiri died of lung infection caused by obstructive sleep apnea in Mumbai on 15 February 2022 at 69. Politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cabinet minister Smriti Irani, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed their condolences to Lahiri. Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Chiranjeevi, K.S.Chithra, Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani, Himesh Reshammiya, and others also expressed their condolences.

In the end, we pay condolence to the legendary singer, composer, and record producer, Bappi Lahiri Ji. May he rest in peace. May God give strength to the Lahiri Family to overcome this loss. Om Shanti!!

  1. Nicely written blog on Bappi Da. He was a legend. He lived fir music. His song which I like most-"chalte chalte mere geet yad rakhna". He shall always live among us through his melodious & unique songs.
